Shamshera Box Office Prediction: Can Ranbir Kapoor's Return To Screens After 4 Long Years Bring A Box Office Winner?

Naturally, after the loss of the production house's last film starring Akshay Kumar in and As 'Samrat Prithviraj', YRF would be anticipating a good recovery business from Ranbir Kapoor starrer 'Shamshera'.

New Delhi: 'Shamshera' is all set to be released on Friday, July 22. With 'Shamshera', Ranbir Kapoor is returning to the silver screen after a hiatus of five long years. His last release was Rajkumar Hirani's biopic on Sanjay Dutt titled 'Sanju'(2018) which was a massive blockbuster. If trade reports of opening day business of Ranbir's biggest five successful films are to be seen, all seemed to have done very well. Considering the amount of promotions that the team of 'Shamshera' has done over the last month and with the Yash Raj banner releasing the film on 4350 screens, the highest post-pandemic, a lot of expectation seems to be riding on the film. Naturally, after the loss of the production house's last film starring Akshay Kumar in and As 'Samrat Prithviraj', YRF would be anticipating a good recovery business from 'Shamshera'.

Let's take a look at Ranbir Kapoor's best opening films' that did good business at the box office

1. Sanju: Rs. 34.75 crores
2. Besharam: Rs21.56 crores
3. Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani: Rs19.45 crores
4. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: Rs. 13.30 crores
5. Tamasha: Rs. 10. 94 crores

Yash Raj Films also seems to be the only production company to have waited through all three waves of COVID-19 to release their films in theaters. All our films have been made for the cinematic, big screen experience, so we took the route of theatrical release,” YRF vice president, international operations, Nelson D’Souza told Deadline. “Of course, there were delays due to the pandemic and dates needed to be reworked. But this also allowed us time to revise and plan our marketing strategy.”

'Shamshera' has been filmed on the massive budget of Rs. 150 crores, if reports are to be believed 'Samrat Prithviraj' was mounted at Rs. 175 crores, and many are expecting that this mega-star film will recover the average box office run which Bollywood films have been giving.

Interestingly, unexpected films like 'The Kashmir Files' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' seemed to have done greater business from among the bandwagon of Bollywood films starring major heroes which released this year in theaters.

While actors, producers, filmmakers and analysts have called out the changing consumer patterns post pandemic for this changing box office business for Bollywood films ( as has been the case across the world), many films from the Southern film industries seemed to have done better at the box office.

SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' was expected to a great extent as was the Yash starrer 'KGF: Chapter 2' but interestingly, these films have even given the bigger Hollywood films like 'Thor: Love & Thunder' and 'Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness' a run for their money.

As 'Shamshera' releases pan India on Friday, it has also been reported by trade analyst Taran Adarsh that the film is releasing on the largest number of screens (4350) post-pandemic.

YRF seems to be going full-frontal with 'Shamshera'. Yash Raj's last two films: 'Samrat Prithviraj' released on 3750 screens and '83TheFilm' on 3741;both of which bombed at the box office. From the screen count, the production house is out to take another risk as far its theatrical release is concerned.

Whether or not the film performs well at the box-office, Bollywood also has other major projects like Aamir Khan's highly-anticipated 'Laal Singh Chaddha', Akshay Kumar starrer 'Raksha Bandhan', Hrithi Roshan's 'Vikram Vedha' and 'Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali' featuring Salman Khan which can overturn the box office tide.

Nevertheless, all the best to the team of 'Shamshera'.

'Shamshera' is a period-action film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Vaani Kapoor, Ahsutosh Rana and Saurabh Shukla. The film is based on a dacoit tribe that fights for its independence from British rule in India in the 1800s. Directed by 'Agneepath' fame Karan Malhotra, the film will feature Ranbir in a double role.
